Watchdog Group Targets Ilhan Omar Over Alleged $50,000 in Unpaid Student Loans

A conservative watchdog organization has accused Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar of being delinquent on as much as $50,000 in federal student loans, urging House Speaker Mike Johnson to take immediate action by garnishing her congressional wages.

The group claims Omar, a member of the progressive “Squad,” has failed to meet her repayment obligations, raising questions about financial responsibility among lawmakers who publicly advocate for student debt forgiveness.

Calls for Garnishment of Congressional Wages

In a formal letter sent to Speaker Johnson, the watchdog organization argued that no member of Congress should be above the law, particularly when they owe taxpayer-funded debts.

“Representative Omar has built her platform around student loan cancellation while allegedly failing to pay her own,” the group stated. “It’s time for accountability.”

They requested that Omar’s congressional salary be subject to garnishment under federal repayment regulations until the alleged debt is fully repaid.

Omar’s Office Responds

While Omar’s office has not directly confirmed the existence of the debt, a spokesperson dismissed the claims as a “baseless political stunt”, accusing conservative activists of attempting to undermine her credibility.

The spokesperson emphasized that Omar has long fought for comprehensive student debt relief, arguing that the focus should be on “fixing the system that burdens millions of Americans.”

Political Repercussions

The accusation comes at a politically sensitive time as student loan repayment has resumed nationwide following pandemic-era pauses.
Critics argue that Omar’s alleged delinquency undermines her position as a vocal advocate for loan forgiveness, while supporters view the accusations as another partisan attack targeting progressive lawmakers.

Analysts say the controversy could become a talking point in the 2026 election cycle, further intensifying debates around student debt policy and political integrity.
