Behzad Mohammadzadeh and Marwan Abusrour Cyber Attacks
Behzad Mohammadzadeh and Marwan Abusrour are facing serious criminal charges in the United States for allegedly targeting and damaging protected computer systems. The two individuals are accused of defacing hundreds of websites worldwide with messages supporting Iran and promoting hacker activities. Mohammadzadeh, in particular, is believed to have altered the content of more than 1,100 websites, replacing original content with images of the late General Qassem Soleimani and messages such as “Down with America.” These actions reportedly began around September 4, 2018, and continued for several years, highlighting a persistent pattern of cyber-attacks.
According to authorities, Mohammadzadeh and Abusrour’s attacks were not limited to international websites. They allegedly targeted websites hosted in the United States as well, transmitting computer code to around 51 sites and changing their content to promote pro-Iranian messages. These actions have drawn attention from federal law enforcement agencies, as the alleged attacks constitute intentional damage to protected computers, a serious crime under U.S. law.
On September 3, 2020, a federal grand jury in the District of Massachusetts indicted both Mohammadzadeh and Abusrour. The charges included Conspiracy to Commit Intentional Damage to a Protected Computer and Intentional Damage to a Protected Computer. Following the indictment, federal arrest warrants were issued for both individuals, making them wanted by U.S. authorities. The case highlights the increasing challenges governments face in dealing with international cybercrime, particularly attacks motivated by political agendas.
Experts in cybersecurity have emphasized that attacks like those allegedly carried out by Mohammadzadeh and Abusrour can have serious consequences. They not only disrupt the operations of the targeted websites but can also compromise sensitive data and undermine public trust in online platforms. Federal agencies continue to warn that cyber threats are evolving and often involve sophisticated methods to avoid detection while spreading political messages or misinformation.
This ongoing case serves as a reminder of the importance of cybersecurity for both private organizations and government entities. Protecting websites and online systems from unauthorized access and damage is critical to maintaining digital safety and national security. Law enforcement officials continue to pursue Mohammadzadeh and Abusrour, underscoring the commitment of U.S. authorities to hold cybercriminals accountable for their actions.
