With just a week left before Election Day, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has made a strong comeback, slicing into Democrat Zohran Mamdani’s once-commanding lead in the New York City mayoral race, according to a Suffolk University poll released Monday.

The poll, conducted between October 18–22, shows Cuomo gaining significant traction among moderate Democrats and independents who have expressed growing concerns about economic issues, policing, and housing affordability.

“Andrew Cuomo narrowing Zohran Mamdani’s lead marks a dramatic shift in voter sentiment,” said political analyst Carla Jennings. “The former governor’s reputation for pragmatic leadership appears to be resonating again.”

Suffolk Poll Shows Tightening Mayoral Race

The Suffolk University survey places Zohran Mamdani at 41% support and Andrew Cuomo close behind at 37%, with 22% of voters still undecided.
Just a month ago, Mamdani led by nearly 12 points — a margin that has steadily eroded as Cuomo stepped up campaign appearances in Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island.

The focus keyword Andrew Cuomo narrows Zohran Mamdani’s lead has dominated political headlines this week, highlighting how voter mood in New York may be shifting away from progressive policies toward centrist pragmatism.

Why Andrew Cuomo’s Momentum Matters

Cuomo’s late surge in the polls demonstrates his enduring political relevance despite controversies that led to his 2021 resignation. His campaign has focused heavily on public safety, job growth, and restoring trust in city leadership, resonating with New Yorkers frustrated by rising crime and inflation.

Mamdani, a state assemblyman representing Astoria, Queens, has drawn strong backing from progressives and younger voters with his housing reform and anti-corporate agenda, but some analysts believe his far-left platform may struggle to hold moderate Democrats in the final stretch.

“Mamdani’s message connects emotionally, but Cuomo’s connects practically,” said pollster Robert Hill of Suffolk University. “Voters want change, but they also want results.”

Key Issues Influencing the New York City Mayoral Race

The New York City mayoral race has been shaped by voter concerns over crime, economic recovery, and housing affordability — issues that have dominated campaign debates and media coverage.

    • Public Safety: Cuomo has pledged to expand NYPD presence and modernize community policing programs.

  • Housing: Mamdani continues to push for rent freezes and large-scale public housing investments.

  • Economy: Both candidates advocate job creation, but differ sharply on taxation and regulation policies.

The poll also noted that Cuomo’s favorability among independents has risen by 9% in the past two weeks, while Mamdani’s numbers have plateaued.

Election Day Outlook

With Election Day approaching on November 5, 2025, both campaigns are intensifying efforts to mobilize supporters. Cuomo’s team is targeting undecided voters in Brooklyn and Queens, while Mamdani’s campaign focuses on youth turnout and immigrant communities.

Political observers say that if the current trend continues, the race could end in a statistical tie by the weekend — a stunning development for a contest once seen as Mamdani’s to lose.
