Steve Hilton Blasts Proposition 50 as ‘Corrupt Power Grab’ by Gavin Newsom – THE STOP OF TIMES

Steve Hilton Proposition 50 Controversy Erupts in California Politics

Republican gubernatorial candidate Steve Hilton launched a blistering attack on Proposition 50, calling it a “disgusting, corrupt power grab” fueled by Governor Gavin Newsom’s presidential ambitions.

Speaking to Newsmax on Monday, Hilton warned that the ballot initiative threatens California’s democratic balance and consolidates excessive power in Sacramento.

“This is not about reform — it’s about control,” Hilton said. “Gavin Newsom wants to centralize power and build his résumé for the White House.”

What Is Proposition 50?

The Steve Hilton Proposition 50 debate centers around a proposed constitutional amendment that would expand the governor’s executive powers in emergency situations and fiscal management.

Supporters claim the measure ensures quick action during crises like wildfires, droughts, and economic downturns. But critics, led by Hilton and other conservatives, argue it opens the door to unchecked executive authority.

Hilton described it as “the California version of political overreach,” warning voters not to be fooled by the proposition’s language of “efficiency” and “reform.”

Hilton: Newsom’s Eyes Are on Washington

During his Newsmax appearance, Hilton directly linked Proposition 50 to what he called Gavin Newsom’s 2028 presidential strategy.

“Every move Newsom makes — from national ads to policy posturing — is about building a campaign narrative,” Hilton said.
“Proposition 50 is part of that plan. It’s designed to make him look like a decisive national leader while weakening checks and balances at home.”

Political analysts note that Hilton’s sharp critique taps into growing conservative frustration with California’s progressive leadership and reflects his effort to position himself as the populist alternative in the upcoming gubernatorial race.

Supporters Push Back

Newsom’s allies dismissed Hilton’s remarks as “political theater.”

State Assembly member Carla Reyes, a Democrat backing Proposition 50, argued the measure would streamline California’s crisis response and save taxpayer money.

“This is about protecting Californians, not politics,” Reyes said in a press briefing.

But Hilton insists the measure’s fine print tells another story.
He urged voters to “read between the lines” and understand how the amendment could expand gubernatorial spending powers without proper legislative oversight.

Public Reaction and Political Impact

The Steve Hilton Proposition 50 clash has gained traction on social media, with hashtags like #Prop50 and #NewsomPowerGrab trending on X (formerly Twitter).

Polls show California voters are split, with 41% supporting the measure, 39% opposing, and 20% undecided.

Hilton has seized on that uncertainty, launching a grassroots campaign labeled “Stop Prop 50 Now,” aimed at educating voters through town halls and online outreach.

“This election isn’t just about one proposition,” Hilton said. “It’s about whether Californians are willing to hand over their freedoms for political convenience.”

A Test of Leadership for 2026

Political observers see Proposition 50 as an early referendum on Gavin Newsom’s leadership and Steve Hilton’s credibility as a challenger.

If Hilton’s message resonates, it could re-energize California’s conservative base heading into the 2026 gubernatorial election.

Meanwhile, Democrats hope the measure will highlight Newsom’s efficiency and crisis-management skills — the same qualities his critics say mask a hunger for higher office.

The outcome of Proposition 50 will likely shape California’s political landscape — and perhaps influence the national stage — in the years ahead.
