Trump Calls on Senate GOP to End Filibuster to Reopen Government

President Donald Trump escalated pressure on Senate Republicans Friday, urging them via Truth Social to eliminate the Senate filibuster — a move he says is necessary to reopen the government and push through key legislation blocked by Democrats.
“The Democrats are holding our government hostage,” Trump wrote. “Republicans must act NOW. End the filibuster, pass the bills, and get America moving again!”
The comments come amid the longest government shutdown in U.S. history, with moderate senators struggling to find a compromise that satisfies both parties.
Senate GOP Faces Internal Divisions
Several Senate Republicans, including Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, have long resisted scrapping the filibuster — the 60-vote threshold that allows the minority party to block most legislation.
Critics within the GOP warn that ending it could backfire if Democrats regain control of the Senate, while Trump allies argue that maintaining the rule paralyzes conservative priorities.
“This isn’t about politics — it’s about progress,” one Trump adviser said privately, noting that the former president wants “Republicans to stop playing defense.”
Democrats Push Back
Democratic leaders quickly condemned Trump’s statement, calling it an “attack on the foundation of Senate procedure.”
Sen. Chuck Schumer said the move would “destroy any remaining bipartisanship” in Washington, accusing Trump of “playing political games while millions of Americans go unpaid.”
What’s Next
The pressure from Trump adds another layer of tension to an already gridlocked Congress.
If GOP lawmakers align with Trump’s demand, it could reshape how the Senate functions for years to come — and set the stage for a fierce 2026 legislative showdown.
