AI Data Centers Expansion in U.S.
OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank have announced plans to develop five new artificial intelligence data centers in the United States as part of their ambitious Stargate project. This initiative was first launched with support from former President Donald Trump, aiming to invest up to $500 billion to expand AI infrastructure across the country. The project seeks to eventually reach a total capacity of 10 gigawatts, enhancing the computational power necessary for AI technologies.
OpenAI will collaborate with Oracle to establish three sites in Shackelford County, Texas; Dona Ana County, New Mexico; and an undisclosed location in the Midwest. Additionally, two more centers will be built in Lordstown, Ohio, and Milam County, Texas, in partnership with SoftBank and its affiliate. These expansions, along with other ongoing projects, are expected to bring Stargate’s data center capacity to nearly 7 gigawatts and involve more than $400 billion in investment over the next three years.

The project is projected to create around 25,000 onsite jobs, highlighting its significant economic impact. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman emphasized that AI can only reach its full potential if sufficient computational resources are available. The initiative also involves financing through leased chips, with Nvidia committing up to $100 billion to supply data center chips, further strengthening the AI ecosystem.
Generative AI services, including ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot, rely heavily on this growing infrastructure, and the project underscores the United States’ focus on maintaining leadership in AI technology, particularly amid international competition and security considerations.
