Jewish Leaders Condemn Heritage Foundation for Defending Tucker Carlson
A growing rift has emerged between several prominent Jewish organizations and the Heritage Foundation following the conservative think tank’s president, Kevin Roberts, publicly defending Tucker Carlson after his controversial podcast interview with white nationalist Nick Fuentes.
The tension has sparked heated debate across political and religious circles, with many accusing Heritage of legitimizing extremist rhetoric that promotes hate and antisemitism.
“There’s a difference between free speech and amplifying dangerous ideology,” said Rabbi David Saperstein, a former U.S. ambassador for international religious freedom. “This defense is not leadership — it’s recklessness.”
Kevin Roberts Defends Carlson Amid Backlash
During a radio appearance on Monday, Roberts said that while he disagreed with Fuentes’ views, he defended Carlson’s right to “engage with anyone in pursuit of open dialogue.”
“Conservatism has always been about ideas and open debate,” Roberts said. “We cannot silence those we disagree with if we want truth to prevail.”
His comments quickly ignited backlash from Jewish community leaders, civil rights advocates, and several prominent conservative donors who demanded clarification from Heritage’s board.
Several Jewish advocacy groups, including the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) and the American Jewish Committee (AJC), released statements condemning Roberts’ defense as “deeply troubling” and “morally irresponsible.”
Tucker Carlson and Nick Fuentes Podcast Sparks Outrage
Carlson’s decision to host Fuentes — a figure widely known for antisemitic remarks and extremist views — has reignited debate about the media’s role in giving platforms to hate speech.
In the podcast episode, Fuentes made several inflammatory comments about Jewish influence in politics and culture. While Carlson did not endorse those views, critics say he failed to challenge or condemn them.
“Silence in the face of hate is complicity,” said Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO of the ADL. “Carlson’s platforming of Fuentes, and Roberts’ defense of that, sends the wrong message at a dangerous time.”
Conservative Divide Deepens
The controversy has exposed deeper divisions within the American conservative movement.
While some on the right praised Roberts for standing up for “free speech principles,” others warned that aligning with figures like Fuentes damages the conservative cause and alienates Jewish voters.
A senior Heritage Foundation fellow, speaking anonymously, told THE STOP OF TIMES that the internal atmosphere has been “tense” since Roberts’ remarks.
“There’s frustration from staff and donors alike,” the source said. “Many believe Roberts’ comments could jeopardize Heritage’s reputation as a serious policy institution.”
Jewish Leaders Call for Accountability
Several Jewish organizations are now calling for the Heritage Foundation to issue a formal apology and reaffirm its opposition to antisemitism and hate speech.
“Words matter, and so do associations,” said Rabbi Sharon Brous of Los Angeles. “Defending this kind of platforming normalizes extremism and erodes moral clarity.”
As the backlash grows, Roberts has doubled down, insisting that his remarks were taken out of context and that the Heritage Foundation “has always stood against bigotry of any kind.”
However, major donors and allied groups are reportedly reconsidering future funding until the controversy is addressed more directly.
A Test of Values for Conservative Institutions
The Heritage Foundation Tucker Carlson controversy highlights an ongoing challenge for conservative institutions navigating the line between defending free expression and condoning extremist voices.
Observers say the episode could have lasting implications for the Heritage Foundation’s credibility — and for broader conservative efforts to build trust with Jewish communities and moderate voters.
“This is a defining moment,” said political analyst Rachel Cohen. “How Heritage handles this will determine whether it remains a mainstream policy think tank or becomes entangled in the culture wars it once sought to rise above.”
