Oklahoma Senator Markwayne Mullin has made it clear that Senate Republicans are not ready to eliminate the filibuster, despite growing pressure from former President Donald Trump to remove what he calls an “obstruction to progress.” The statement adds another layer to the ongoing power struggle within the Republican Party over how aggressively to push Trump’s legislative agenda in the coming months.

🔹 Trump’s Push to End the Filibuster

Former President Donald Trump has recently intensified his calls for the Senate GOP to scrap the 60-vote threshold that allows the minority party to block major legislation. Trump argues that the rule is outdated and only serves to help Democrats stall key Republican priorities — from immigration reforms to tax policy and border security.

In a series of posts on Truth Social, Trump blasted Senate leaders for being “too weak” to take bold action, claiming that “the filibuster is killing America’s future.” He urged Republicans to “wake up” and use their majority power to advance his America First policies without interference.

However, despite Trump’s growing influence, not all Republican lawmakers agree with this approach — and Sen. Markwayne Mullin is one of the most vocal voices cautioning against it.

🔹 Mullin Warns Against Short-Term Thinking

Speaking to reporters this week, Sen. Mullin stressed the importance of maintaining the filibuster as a cornerstone of Senate tradition and balance.

> “We have to think long term,” Mullin said. “If we remove the filibuster now to pass bills we want, we could regret it when Democrats regain control. It protects the minority — and that’s what makes the Senate unique.”

Mullin emphasized that while he supports the former president’s goals of strengthening the economy, securing the border, and reining in government spending, he believes abolishing the filibuster would set a dangerous precedent that could be turned against conservatives in the future.

🔹 A Divided GOP

The debate over the filibuster exposes deep divisions within the Republican Party. Some lawmakers and Trump-aligned figures argue that Democrats would not hesitate to eliminate the rule if it served their interests — pointing to past discussions about doing so during the Biden administration.

Others, like Mullin, believe the Senate’s checks and balances must remain intact.

> “The filibuster forces both parties to compromise,” Mullin explained. “It’s not about politics — it’s about protecting democracy from becoming a one-party system.”

Analysts suggest that this internal rift could shape the GOP’s direction heading into the 2026 midterm elections. Trump’s loyalists see the removal of the filibuster as essential to enacting bold reforms, while traditional conservatives view it as a reckless gamble that could backfire.

🔹 Historical Context: A Rule Under Fire

The filibuster — a rule requiring most legislation to secure at least 60 votes in the Senate — has long been a flashpoint in American politics. Over the past decade, both Democrats and Republicans have debated altering or abolishing it.
In 2013, Democrats used the “nuclear option” to end filibusters on most presidential appointments. Four years later, Republicans extended that to Supreme Court nominees under then-Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Now, the question remains whether the GOP will take the next step and eliminate it for legislation entirely — a move that could reshape the U.S. Senate’s role in government forever.
